Sacrificing rep for the greater good?
I'd be willing to have my rep reset, and start all over
Any other takers? It was a bit of a giggle, for a while, but given the sort of consternation rep has created and it's awarding in the lounge, and with the general clean-up now might be a good time. A hack to disable rep in the lounge can't be that hard, coz the forum id should already be in the handle for the post it's being awarded for I KNOW, I KNOW, this belongs in the "Suggestions & Feedback forum", but I'm thinking this has a greater readership, and I just want to see how others felt on such a proposal. There are a few 'worthy' rep holders who don't visit the lounge that much, and many more who do, but lets face it, they're little more than 'stars for homework' at gradeschool. /aside.. I can't believe I was ever that naieve, even at grade school ![]() --Ax |

Don't think it will happen somehow.
It has been suggested on more than one occasion that rep points in the lounge should carry little or no weight, but that would be too hard to implement. As the rep thing is hack, I am sure that it would be pretty difficult to modify again if the reps were reset and the system gets abused again as it inevitabley will...

Jamie, it's not hard at all. Edwin hacked it over at Netbits so that
you couldn't give or receive rep in a certain forum. It took him like 5 mins to do it too... I agree though, even if rep was reset [which shouldn't be too hard to do, as you can just change all the values back to 10], there is no way to guarantee that we'll all do it 'right' next time... ![]()

I would normally hit 'I agree with this post', but that seems quite inappropriate. Anyway, what maybe best is to have 'rep' in the lounge, but having a weight of zero? This would keep in with what the 'guin has just said. I also agree with the grade school thing, and myself I don't even care for it too much, but I think it has contributed to the lounge's downfall so therefore the issue needs to be addressed. (Which it is, thanks to the mod's)

Perhaps the threshold of one rep-power per 100 rep points is just too low. IMO, the snowballing effect is largely a product of that. It's now possible to get one extra rep power by having as few as three of the `right people' agreeing with you.

rep reset = bye bye trolls.
my opinion? can't really say, I'm not active part of these forums yet, and probably won't be as I don't have time for the other forums and *some* moderators here prefer to get rid from people like me. |

That's good then. Damn, I need to get more power in these forums, being a mod in an underutilzed one doesn't seem to give any credibility at all Others, and myself, have asked for the reps in the lounge to moderated (perhaps not the best word here). None the less, I am sure it will be abused again, and can individuals rep points be changed / reduced. Time will tell whether posting pertinant answer to members question related to some techinical problem will receive the merit the 'rep' it deserves or whether the lounge will still be the main source or reputation (for most people). |
