Search Limitations
Riddle me this: How do I search for posts containing the words "multicharacter constant" in only the C programming forum?

When in the C Programming forum, use the 'Search this forum' option ?

Precisely the answers I expected. Have you tried it? It should not be hard, it is a seemingly simple task. Maybe I should have posted that question in that old Riddles thread.
Guess again! *is enjoying being cryptic so far* $10* to the first person to show me a list of C Programming Forum threads containing the text "multicharacter constant". That's all I ask. * Not really, I don't think I even have $10. Anybody need a freelance developer? Anybody? Last edited by peenie : July 16th, 2007 at 09:16 PM. |

Ah, do you mean because 'multicharacter' is greater than 12 characters it won't search for that ?

That character limit has always annoyed me too. In particular searching for the Actionscript class ExternalInterface. Breaking that up is not helpful, as "external" and "interface" are fairly common words.
In threads I answer, where I have to talk about ExternalInterface I write it in 2 words and explain the actual class name is all 1 word.

Yeah I was talking about the 12 character limit. Technology begets long words, 12 characters might be becoming obsolete!
And ChiefWigs wins the prize, I guess, for "multicharacter constant" at least (which coincidently only appears on the C programming forum, guess it wasn't a well-constructed riddle!). This does not let you use the other advanced search features like username/forum filtering. Still, if you're ever in NYC I'll buy you a beer (which probably amounts to about $10 ). ![]() So I guess the true riddle remains unsolved; there does not appear to be a way to search for a word longer than 12 characters on a specific forum, or by a specific user, or from a specific time. On the other hand you wouldn't expect too many results from long words so at least it's not too bad to look through all the results and pick the relevant ones.
