but if a guy was an apache and he wanted to call himself 'apache guy' or something like it, wouldn't the name of the amerindian tribe take precedence over a relative latecomer software name ?
it's almost like who should own the rights over the budweiser name - the better known american brand or the original czech brand ? |

Like said, they could just ask an admin to remove the username or change it. I don't see what the fuss is.
Feel free to go create an account with my name in it, I don't care. There are places on the internet where people have already registered this handle, while i might be a bit disappointed that i can't have it there, kudos to them for having such a neat name. As for LinusTorvalds or something, well feel free to go create a user with my name, I don't care, as I'm sure most people feel.

I'm not suggesting a blanket ban of all trademarked names but a few probably 10 or 20 should be reserved. Linus is a perfect example as some twat uses his picture and links to linux.com -> creating the impression that it is the real Linus. Then again Fedora is on a different level to Devshed so you don't have the same level of "interest" to any infringements. |

Why 10 or 20 and not the rest? How do you select which ones to use? Why would Linus Torvalds get special protection for his name and not me, for example? Someone could register using *my* real name, link to my homepage too, "creating the impression that it is the real" me. In that event, I'd ask the admins to remove the account.

You think that Mr Torvalds might not have a relation somewhere called Linus, I'd suggest there's a high probability of that, but he's already registered so it's not a problem.
It's a non-issue, let it go ...

I don't understand why you consider well-known companies and projects to be entitled to this kind of "protection" and not others. Even if it's agreed that it's a good idea, why shouldn't someone like Apple Martin be stopped from signing up using her real name just because some company also happens to have that name? (OK, I'm seriously suggesting that a 2-year-old is a likely member, but the point remains). And do we also ban variations on those names to stop people using slightly modified versions? If so we could end up with a Linda Callahan situation. As Ax says, it's really not an issue that's important enough to worry about. It can be dealt with on a reactionary basis if there's a problem. Deciding what names should be banned and what procedures to use to ban them (remembering of course that there's no way to automatically check the avatars and signatures for corporate logos) is a difficult process too. It's just not worth it. You think the Fedora forum is on a higher level than us for implementing something like this. I think they're being paranoid. |
