Should some usernames be banned?
Should usernames of open source/proprietary projects/well known names such as "firefox", "apache", "freebsd" or "microsoft", "linus" be reserved so that users cannot use them?
On fedora IRC you cannot register a handle such as those above so I'm not sure about devshed. Just my 2 bob's worth. |

What would be the reasoning behind such a ban?

I think a good few have already signed up and been banned.
If someone wants to use them as a handle, can't see a problem with it. Those who register with such names are invariably trolls, with the exception of the honorable Mr Jimmy Gosling who frequents the shed from time to time with his illuminating insight into the world of computing at large, and why he wrote Java

freebsd was also an excellent poster, but s/he hasn't been around since before the change over. The profile only shows five posts, but if you search you get over twenty pages worth.

It has to do with legalese. If you have time ask at Fedora IRC. |

How ? Can't see there being any legal standing for it provding you weren't using the name for marketing purposes. But then again, I'm not a lawyer . . . . .have needed one a few times though
Seriously though, can't see there being any problems with it.

If a name is found to be bad, moderators will prune it. Until then, it's not worth the hassle of putting together a list of names to deny, most of which have probably already signed up here anyway. |

Pointless bitching? Imagine what the real Linus Torvalds would do if he saw this user at devshed? Or if users called microsoft and apples used the respective logos of those companies? |
