True. Only thing that stops us from deleting threads is Google hits. I got the idea of pruning from some TV forums. They cut everything over an year, which seems quite reasonable to me, but I wasn't thinking about the SE hits, etc. |

I don't think auto-pruning forums like the Lounge would have any problems, but that's off-topic since this thread is about programming forums.

The fact that people sometimes dredge up three year old posts for follow up probably should be seen as an indicator that those three year old posts are valid and useful.
It doesn't happen that often. If it does, the moderators of whatever forum can make a case by case call on whether to lock it. Not an issue.

never delete the threads.... I you, as suggested, prune old threads, then 1.dev archives disappears. 2.people searching for an answer to their q. don't find one, resulting in 3. you answer further questions.

Why should the date of the thread matter at all? If the posts have relevant connection, isn't that what counts, the content not some arbitrary control feature like time? If a post today furthers the knowledge base initiated in a thread that died a few months, even a year or more ago, so what as long as it's still useful. Time is in the mind.
To tell you the truth, I'm seriously thinking about searching out really old threads and resurrecting them with relevant content that advances their value... He he he... |

As said above somewhat, if the whole forum was like the Lounge and the Outhouse, pruning would be fine. In fact, pruning should be done in the Outhouse regularily according to the rules up top.

Thread digging with a happy ending == AV forum post.
Ideal reason for not deleting, pruning, locking etc. any old threads ! |
