Stop thread digging!
I believe most of you hate people who dig up threads without even knowing it. You know, those who post in a thread dated "Jan 22 2005" or something
![]() Suggestion: whenever a thread is, like, 3 months dead, create a big, nasty pop-up alerting the user to this fact ![]() |

Any examples?
What if the posters problem is direclty related to the problem then? It could be that the solution given and working then, has not worked for the later post.
By the way, could you point a few posts illustrating the case? |

I think jafet refers to a pop-up advising that the post is dated, not stopping them from posting. (I've been wrong before). Not sure about his insistence on it being big and nasty though
, that would really spoil the aesthetics ![]() It's not a bad idea, but again it's not that big a problem. Were it me, I don't think I'd bother with it, but, hey that's just me

The majority of new posters will start a new thread when posting a question (although, this could be halved if they would make use of the forum search function first ! ) and if they don't, then a mod of that forum will split the thread appropriately. I'd be more concerned if existing members were dragging up old threads to answer questions. |

Suggestion: whenever a newbie (say up to the sig/avatar-threshold of 3 months) tries to post a thread in one of the coding forums (ie: not Outhouse, Lounge, Suggestions, etc.), they get redirected to the search form instead. Inevitable mayhem ensues... |

We already have a mod that gets all big and mad when people dig up old threads.
It's called Simon. ![]()

@BeetleJuice,
The majority of users probably don't even register, just take their info, and go away. Can't make life impossible, impressions go down ... |

in the valve forums (that greedy evil games manufacturer) they FORCE you to search before they allow you to post a request, which i think is an excellent idea. Maybe this could stop happening when you become 100posts+90days full member?

Making it more difficult to post is a surefire way of losing traffic, IMO. Plus, you've no way of knowing if they've searched by other means, e.g. a "site:forums.devshed.com" line in a Google search, which I do sometimes, since the forum search length restriction means that there are some things I can't search for here.

What about an automated script that locks threads after say, 4 months of inactivity or something similar? If needed, a mod/admin could always re-open such a thread, right?

That would also stop legitimate thread necromancy (i.e. "I've searched the forum, found this thread, tried the code in post #2 but need to adapt it a bit"). I know that some people are annoyed by *any* posts in old threads. It doesn't bother me as much in a number of circumstances.
