Suggestion - "earned" rep
How about a hack that makes rep "earned" (a very stong term) in the outhouse worth like 1/10000 a point and the lounge like 1/1000 as much as those in real forums? The rep system is worthless when there are so many users who have a useful/(outhouse + lounge) posting ratio that is near zero.

If you haven't noticed by now, much of the current rep system is nothing but a big toy for us to play with. Even JC and the admins have noted that on various occasions (though I can't find a link at the moment).
Thus, I think such a hack would be more wasteful of the admins' time than a useful feature to us users. (Disclaimer: This opinion is my own, and may not necessarily reflect the opinion of the other moderators, owners, or administrators of any aspect of the Developer Shed network of communities.)

Disclaimer notwithstanding, I agree with coder... it's not worth any effort.

Out of curiosity, why is it retained as a "feature"?

Because it keeps people coming back... how many members come to the forums if onbly to complain about the stoopid rep system? Because it helps to make the forums interesting, people are willing to hang around and chat. The more often they show up, the more likely one of them will click on a link and provide revenue. |

To be honest, I really don't see what the big deal is about the rep system. It in no way counts towards anything as to the person posting. If I have higher rep than someone, it in no way means that I have more knowledge than people with less rep than me.
I take it all as a wee joke and to be honest, if I disappeared down to 1 point tomorrow or if it disappeared altogether then it wouldn't bother me at all. Don't get so worked up about it. ![]() |

Who's worked up? ![]() I'm just curious about the rationale behind retaining it as a "feature"; specifically, why - if it's genuinely regarded as "worthless" - is it kept? Doing so seems only to detract from the professionalism of this forum in general. Personally I don't see the sense in retaining a feature that doesn't add value, but maybe I'm missing the hidden purpose of it all. ![]() |
