The floating ad just popped up on phandroid for me, and I saw it somewhere else late last night. It seems that this is definitely a tracking activity of some kind, which is generally frowned upon by the kind of people we have around here.

    Hi,

Charles is looking into the floating ad and he'll let you know what it is, etc.

As for the tommorrow ad, it is on my to-do list, but it is not a top priority as there are many other more pressing things that need attending to. But never fear - I have not forgotten it. Try not to look directly at it and you should be safe from its evil powers. In fact, when I designed it, I did so by looking at its reflection in a mirror.

I've gone over the site and it must have been a rogue ad that was in the rotation and pulled when realized, as I can't find it now. The next time an offending ad is seen, can you include a screen cap? That way we can force the advertiser to make sure they police these ads, and we can reduce or stop these issues.

    Thanks,
    Charles

Screenshots for all the offending ads are included here. the "floating" ad is a 1x1 invisible flash app that sticks to the top left corner of the visible window. I only noticed it because flashblock has a minimum size of 50x50.

James, I only mentioned the "tommorow" because someone said it would be done last month, then nobody has commented on it since then. I just think it looks unprofessional for you guys, but I've avoided looking right at it, thanks.

    Hey Dan,

Yer right in both regards. Let me get Charles to take another look at this thread. At first I thought maybe that was a tracking pixel being used for traffic reporting purposes, but if it is a Flash one, then I am not so sure what. At any rate, I'll keep you guys posted and thanks again.

I've been seeing those damn floating ads off and on for a few months. Originally, I thought maybe I had a malware infection. But I did a complete inspection and ended up guessing it was D.S.

I've spent about 10 minutes today waiting on oads.aperture.displaymarketplace.com. Kill them with fire.

Barring that, have them load AFTER the content so I don't get fed up and leave.

Just had a best buy 3/4 page ad... These ads are getting more and more annoying (and more and more frequent).

    • ManiacDan agrees : Flashblock saves the day, seriously. Think about it, you only want flash for youtube anyway.

I can't get it to pop up again (I'll edit with a picture if I see it) but there's one hosted out of oggi_elektra-tech.s3.amazonaws.com in the banner position at the top of the page. One of those expanding ads, with sound too.
    Ad for some movie.

[edit] Found another one (for Adobe CS4) hosted from that same S3 bucket.

Just got one that scrolled over my screen like a "please take our survey" ad. Ad source:
    Code:
    http://amch.questionmarket.com/static/bounce_li-150x250-ul-eng-nul-C110,100,150,115.swf?clickTag=JAVASCRIPT:DL_GotoSurvey();&clickTag2=JAVASCRIPT:DL_Close();
When I copied the flash URL it went away, so I didn't have time to activate it and screenshot it.
