There was a time when DS was highly discretionary about what advertisers they would work with and what ads were permitted to run. It was also required that ads be relevant to the audience. (I don't see any reason for running Lysol ads, unless of course, you actually have a Perl Cookbook in your kitchen!)

It would seem that those days are long gone. DS has sold out and thrown themselves to the dogs.

Did you guys HEAR me defending the ads and then run this? I mean, really. I can't even see a PART of the thread, and the header is all stupid.

I'm getting autoplay movies on EVERY F*CKING page load. As you can see, one if them blows up the size of the entire screen.

I've had enough, fellas. I don't frequent sites that use this type of advertising and I won't continue doing it here.

James, I know you're caught in the firing line, but it seems a bit cheeky to expect us to go on reporting the baddies, while DevShed makes money, and infuriates the regular members. Surely, it's in ZDE/Devshed's interests to QA the ad's before they cause regulars to have a sh!tfit, and drive people away.
BTW If it wasn't for subscription to threads, I wouldn't be here at all, and I'm sure there's a lot more like me...

    Sigh.

    [edit]
So AdBlock on Chrome is awesome. You can block HTML by using CSS selectors, and apparently it doesn't just hide it - prevents it from loading and such too.
Last I knew (at least a year ago) Firefox's AdBlock only did URLs but that could be different now.

I'm still searching for stuff to block, but so far:
    Code:
    forums.devshed.com##IFRAME[src="about:blank"]
    forums.devshed.com##IFRAME[src^="http://ad.doubleclick.net/"]
    forums.devshed.com##A[name="top"]+DIV+TABLE TD[align="center"] TABLE

I got 2 mucinex ads side-by-side earlier. They didn't load at the same time, so not only was I forced to listen to a talking ball of MUCOUS for 45 seconds, but he was echoing himself.

Even if you CAN mute them (which, on some, you cannot), forcing us to scroll 800px past the end of the content to do so is stupid.

Lysol and mucus are perfectly normal ads on a technology site.

    Hi,

I agree with you - I would never expect that to be you guys' job. If you see an annoying ad and want to report it, its appreciated, if not, I completely understand that too.

The audio ads aren't supposed to make it onto our network, and we just started a new program where we can start to filter out the ads better. Hopefully we can work out the kinks on it sooner than later.

We are on top of the audio situation and some of the more overtly "unrelated" ads. Should be gone soon.

Hi, the method I use prevents all the videos from loading. I do get an occasional static advert every now and then but that tends to be because I've fallen behind in keeping my hosts file updated.

I use the MVPS Hosts File with a minor adjustment so I can still use the video player on the BBC website.

It doesn't do any hiding or whatnot, it just stops prevents connections with the specified hosts.
