Admittedly, there is a lot of crap on TV that I wouldn't want my kids watching (don't have children at this point), but man alive, I'm with you guys -- turn the damn thing off.
First amendment stompers. No surprise though. They're the same people who probably blame the gun for gun-involved murders. Why stop at the first amendment, when we can also stomp on the second? I swear, the causes these people create just amaze me. |

I love people that want to blame somebody else for everything. Usually, it's "they need to take responsibility for their actions" -- if they would only listen to themselves and take responsibility for their own parenting.

I dunno... I agree with them on a lot of stuff. Why should we just sit back on our lazy arses and accept whats on TV? Advertisers are the ones who make programming possible so it should be real easy to influence what's is on TV. I like violence and sex mind you but there is a whole lot of crap out there too. I do disagree with them on "The Shield" though. That is a great show. Of course, their site is geared towards parents of young children so I agree that "The Shield" is probably the worst possible show you could let young children watch. Parenting is a hard job. It's nice that there are sites that make the job a little easier by giving us info on what is appropriate for children and what isn't.

The issue is that TV is becoming more like real life with all of these cop/lawyer/medical shows on and some people are starting to see just how f---ed up our society can be -- and they're scared. |

I don't agree with censorship and take responsibility for the programs my children see. I am very unpopular because they want to see '8 mile' and I won't let them.
Thing is the TV stations do not help. I saw one here that advertised a 'raunchy' adult movie during childrens cartoons. In some ways the comercials aimed at kids is much worse ie McDonalds. >>They're the same people who probably blame the gun for gun-involved murders. The gun IS partially to blame. Why? 1. Look at say the UK and the US. the difference in culture is fairly small but the rate of murders per million is massive, around 40 times greater in the US. What is the difference as people can kill each other in many ways? Gun laws, in the US legal guns quickly become illegal guns. ie You need a test to say you can drive a car in all states but only 4 states require a test to use a gun before/after purchase. 2. Think of the difference in using your fists or a weapon as a knife. So much risker, requires more skill and is very personal that people think twice before commiting to the attack. (stabbing someone is like stabbing an orange, same resistance) The gun is the great equalizer, everybody FEELS as/more powerful than the next guy with one in their hand even if he is Bruce Lee. If you do not agree, then what is the reason for the huge diference in murder rates? Is the rest of the world more peaceful than Americans?

For crying out loud Tech.... do you think you could keep on topic for ONE BLOODY POST?!?!
// LOL Anyway... Quote:
If most people had the SLIGHTEST inkling of how ****ed up this soceity can be.... Which is an interesting point, but irrelevant. The problem is that, no matter HOW offended you are, you shouldn't be expecting other people to agree with you, which they are. Of course, this does not preclude them from trying to stop things that offend them. It's very simple really: If you like the shows you support them with dollar votes to the advertisers. If you REALLY like the shows, you can write praise to them. If you don't like the shows, you don't support them with dollar votes to the advertisers. If you REALLY don't like the shows, you can complain about them (which is what these people are doing). The thing that bugs me is that these people are making things out to be truth that aren't. I LOVE this quote: Quote:
This suggests that comparing the chemical toxins in cigarette smoke (which kills people) to alleged mental connections caused by TV violence (which is still up in the air as to whether such connections even exist) is somehow logical. You have to give Dr. Eron and the PTC credit though for combining a couple of different fallacies into one, nice, completely idiotic statement: Red Herring, Appeal to Fear, Questionable Analogy.... I'm sure there are more.. but I can't remember all the fallacies right now. |

I agree that most of what is on TV is trash, and that it is the parents responseablity. It is also the parents responseablity to keep the TV stations in check.
-Tech If people traned thier children on how to use guns there would be little or now gun accidents. There were hardly any back in the 16-18 hundreds. Everyone knew how to use them so they didnt point the gun to thier head to see what would happen if they pulled the trigger. Eclipce

Exactly how? As a parent I am more annoyed by the results of advertising during childrens TV than TV itself. Most kids can tell the difference between reality and a movie or game. There is no way in this world that TV stations are going to modify advertising to sell LESS. >> If you like the shows you support them with dollar votes to the advertisers. If you REALLY like the shows, you can write praise to them. I do but I doubt that my lack of input to McD's is the reason they posted their first operating loss. Though I hope their 'kreepy clown' is one of the cutbacks. I hear McD's (UK) are even going to serve FRUIT that hasn't been near a deep frier! ::sorry to go off topic Ctb:: >>If people traned thier children on how to use guns there would be little or now gun accidents. I was not talking about accidents which make up less than 3% of US gun deaths. Why is it a requirement of the state that you have a driving licence to use a car (and insurance) but not a gun USE licence or even a safe to keep it in? More people are killed with guns in an average DAY in the US than are killed in a YEAR in [Australia + New Zealand + Japan] combined. What is the difference except the US liberal gun laws? I agree on the TV censorship thing, I want to make my own decisions. Turn it off if you don't like it.
As for the guns, I strongly disagree. It's simple, gun laws just make it harder for normal citizens to get guns. If a criminal wants a gun, he can get one anywhere and it will most likely be an illegal gun. New laws are not going to stop that. We have enough laws, and crime keeps going up. More laws will just drive it underground, remember Alcohol, Drugs? Make it illegal and you've just created a great way for criminals to make money. It would be very easy to smuggle gun parts into the country. Keeping a gun in a safe doesn't help me much when that burglar comes in my house. Should I ask him to wait while I enter the combination? And if you're going to tell me it's more likely it will be turned against me, that's just crap. People can and do defend themselves everyday with their firearms. There is a magazine, I think it is called American Rifleman (I think) that publishes at least 20 stories each month about people defending themselves. Now, I do think that "signature" guns that only work for one person are a great idea, and should be seriously pushed. It is an excellent way to stop many accidents, gun theft, etc. I don't know why we have higher murder rates than the other countries. There are a million different variables that could cause that - culture, population makeup, method of reporting crimes - but you can't blame it on the guns. Should we ban cars because idiot drunks get behind the wheel and kill people? Does licensing help keep the drunks off the road? Does licensing make us better drivers? Ask ctb if you think it does, he has a little story he can tell you about bad drivers. Creating new laws is the easy way at trying to solve a problem, but it only works if people follow it. People need to change, they need to stop shooting each other over a pair of sneakers, and other stupid things. </rant>

Sure some people use their gun only for self defence,but if everyone (including wacko's) can get a gun they can go around killing people,like in Columbine high.Such things have never hapenend here in Holland,because guns are iligal. Sure you could defend yourself with a gun against the burglar,but I am pretty sure that the burglar will have a gun too,so he will probably kill you first. What is the diference if the criminal gets his gun iligally or legally?He will shoot other people with it anyways.To me it sounds even worse if a criminal killed someone with a legal gun.Okay,criminals will most probably be able to get a gun iligally anyways,but they can be arrested for possesing a gun (thus preventing them from shooting someone),while in the US they would first have to shoot someone before they are arrested. There aren't many variables,all the western countries are not that diferent,but still in the US more people are shot in one day than in a whole year in other countries.The other variables can cause a minor diferent in the amount of peop |
