ISP for linux
most isp's software doesn't "support" linux.
how would i go about getting internet on rh8? i currently have roadrunner on windows. i called them and asked if i could install on linux, they said "is your modem plugged in, sir?" and "no, u can't do it on linux". if u could give me an idea, or a link. or some companies that allow it on linux. as long as it's not < 56k. thank you |

I think it would be hard to find an ISP that you COULDN'T get working on a linux box- you can use PPP, PPPOE, DHCP, and pretty much anything else in linux. I use earthlink ADSL on my RH 8 box via Roaring Penguin PPPOE (which comes with redhat) and it works beautifully, in fact I have been hosting websites on this box for the last three years.
www.DSLreports.com and google are your best friends here. I'm sure you can get a Roadrunner connection working, you'll just have to work around the clueless tech support people. |

wannabe, you're confusing things like Earthlink's proprietary software package and Internet dialers. All you need is a dialer. Linux has oodles of dialers to choose from (I've found 4 in RH8 so far of varying levels of complexity from very simple like the windows Dial up Networking to very complex like "talk directly to your modem"). All you need to do is call up the ISP and get:
The number to dial in to, a "primary DNS Server", and a "secondary DNS Server". Once you have those three items, all you need to do is setup a dialer in Linux and connect away to your heart's content. True, if you go with somebody and they send you a software package in the mail, it probably won't work in Linux, but who cares? Most of the software they send is buggy, ad-ridden crap anyway. I threw my Earthlink software out the day I got it without ever opening it. And as far as support goes... I think the only prereq most of these places have for Level 1 support "techs" is that they speak half-decent English. Most of those twits probably don't know what Windows is and I can almost guarantee they only bothered to answer so you'd get off the phone and boost their call stats. |

Not that you are, but for anyone in the UK, you can use http://www.ukfsn.org who give all the money they get from the dialup fees to Free Software... very cool

Express56.com
Currently I'm using Express56. It's pretty 56K. When I sign up I asked them about supporting the Linux. They answered their equipment and software is completely compatible with Linux and they have a Linux-guy in their tech-support team. Unfortunately (actually fortunately) I had no chance to talk to him, because everything went smooth and tight exactly on the way shown on their website: URL
