Hi All,

I have got Apache, MySQL and PHP working on a win 98 PC. After all the read up about the best platform to use as a web server (Unix), I would like to purchase a PC and install an O/S probably Linux and then install Apache, PHP and MySQL. Eventually, I would like to build my own web server and host my web site. Any pointers as to spec of PC, modem types/line types, the best way to go about this etc ?
Has anyone done this yet?

TIA

Jackie,

Although the experience of installing Linux would definitely be worthwhile just to learn more about it, you would probably be better off using a professional web hosting company to host your web site.

Not only do you need a server (such as the one that you are considering building), but you also need a reliable, dedicated internet connection. As this eliminates dial-up, cable, and DSL, you would be looking at spending several hundred, if not thousand, dollars per month. That is just for the internet connection alone.

If you already have a dedicated high-speed line, then you might have a better chance. Even so, you will need a very reliable machine in order to have a stable server. Make sure to get plenty of RAM, hard disk space, and backup capabilities. Name brands are always nice for their warranties.

Good luck,

I agree with thinkcomp, I would find a professional hosting company to help you get started.

This is a good entry level server, and it is very affordable. Cobalt.com also makes a bunch of other servers, but then you would need to provide your own T's, Firewalls, CSU-DSU's and more...

I don't know what price range your are looking for exactly but VALinux has some good preconfigured workstations installed with VALinux a distro they used based off my favorite Red Hat. Their cheap systems go for about $900 but are high quality systems. Also bulding your own computer is very cheap and a place with more PC parts then anywhere esle is eBay.

You don't really need what they're suggesting. It all depends on how popular your site is and what you're going to do with it. If you're running amazon.com, yes you're going to need 10 gigs or ram and 5 servers. If you're running a small website with around 1000 hits a day then linux with cable would be fine. Cable is better than DSL for webhosting because cable has a faster upload speed than dsl.

I'm making a beater system with a P166, 64 megs ram and a new hard drive because it will just be a FTP and small hosting company for friends at no charge on Linux. It's more than enough for non high traffic sites.

Just stay away from Windows if you have a low end system.

Steve

Hosting my own site

I have a brand NEW pc, WINDOWS XP! 200 gig HD.

Well I see lots of others are doing it and my hosting substrictions is due to end in a few months, I would like to host my own website.

I do not have many visitors and think it would be a good idea as I could then host for a few friends too and maybe host for others later when I get the hang of it.

Can not be that hard, can it ?

Please advise how I may go about this with a Windows XP system.

Thank you in advance.

Jason
