HOW to configure TAB for spaces in Emacs?

I am learning to program in emacs on unix. I want to get 4 spaces with one tab. How can I find the emacs configuration file and how to change it for my purpose? Thank you in advance. |

It is in your $HOME directory and is named ".emacs". If it does not exist just create the .emacs file.
