Current versions are 11i (also known as 11.11) which is 32 or 64 bit and only runs on PA-RISC and 11.23 which, I think, is 64 but only and runs on both IA64 and PA-RISC platform.
There are books out there but thet are mainly admin 'bibles' or primers aimed at getting through HP qualification.
There are two major 'brands' of Unix (I will get crucified for this!) - one based on AT&T, the other Berkley SVR4. I can never remember which is which, but HP-UX is down one trouser leg of the development stream and Solaris (for example) down the other.
Each will do pretty much the same as the other but there will be little wrinkles and user-supplied updates, enhancements etc., etc. and different ways of doing things.
HPUX used the SD suite of programs for software control - swlist, swinstall, swremove, Solaris uses pkgadd, pkgrm. Both keep tabs on installed software base and inter-dependencies.
When all is said and down until you actually need to know where a configuration file is, or until a hardware error crops up (yes, how they handle hardware is WILDLY diffferent) then you can pretty much just take them both as another type of Unix. Thus it may pay to scout around for a cheap book on generic Unix and use that as a base for getting more in-depth information about a particular brand of Unix.

So, what happens when you strap buttered toast to the back of a cat and throw it out a window?.
