    Use of iconv

I use the iconv command to convert a file from ascii to utf8 in the following way.

    iconv -f ascii -t utf8 sourcefile > targetfile

where sourcefile is the file where text is in ascii. This is the way to use the command as seen in man pages and in google links. But I find the targetfile is still in ascii after running the command even though the command did not give any error.
    Can anybody help in this?

Are you running the command as root ? Or, even file owner ?
