hi there,
looking for recommendations for books on learning Solaris. I have some background in linux (redhat, slackware), but not any real 'actual' unix experience. I was just given a Sun Blade 100, running Solaris (8 or 9, not sure) at work (not given, just for work use), and I'm not sure where to start. any thoughts on books that will walk me through the basics? it's running solaris' windowing environment, but i'd really also like to know the command line stuff for unix (as its different than linux)... thanks!

Sorry for the late response I just regiestered. Sun blade 100 nice box, as for OS try "uname -a", 5.8 = Solaris 8, 5.9 = Solaris 9. As for some recomendations:
Unix in a nutshell ( yes it will be helpful) Solaris 9(or8): the complete reference Solaris Internals: Core Kernel Architecture Unix power tools Any general Unix book will do just depends on what you want to do. Try amazon they have great used book vendors. Also docs.sun.com is a great resource, almost all of the books are free for PDF download. |

Hey JC & Yodamon,
Thanks for the recommendations & the checkup. I appreciate that. I hooked up w/ Unix in a Nutshell, Solaris Boot Camp, and Essential System Administration. uname -a = SunOS 5.9, Generic sun4u sparc SUNW, Sun-Blade-100 ![]() Its a cool box... gotta tweak it a bit, but nice for an in-office webserver. Also, having had some Linux experience, I can't say I'm super-thrilled about Solaris thusfar... PHP doesn't run very well on it ... not that I'm bitchin about the box, just a bit of a bummer.Last edited by drgroove : May 28th, 2003 at 04:43 PM. |
