Unix command to merge 2 directories

Unix command to merge 2 directories
I have 2 directories I want to merge together. I'm a complete Unix beginner but can't find a command that will do this! I tried cp and cat, but they apparently work only for files and not for directories. Any help greatly appreciated!!

You can copy a directory using cp by passing the -R flag, however depending on your definition of merge that may or may not do what you want.
