I don't think it's a wizard thing. It sounds more like a sysadmin who didn't set up a secure system.
This often happens in colleges - an advanced student becomes sysadmin, then gives privs to one of his buddies, or messes up security by playing around. |

Kicking someone off the system is easy if you have the correct permissions. It is simply a matter of killing the shell process. The only thing is that a non-root user cannot kill anyone else's process normally.
Two possibilities: 1. The kid managed to gain root access and can kill anyone's process at will 2. The kid managed to get the password of certain people, logs in as them and can kill their shell (A non-root user can kill a shell that was created by their own account). BTW, just out of curiosity, what school do you go to? Why doesn't your sysadmin enable sshd instead of telnet?

Scorp is saying that it's easy to steal passwords in a telnet environment.
My answer is that "It's a College". That pretty much negates standard practice or a business-like approach. Students are not invested, so they don't hesitate to do dumb things. |
