vms was a dec-os before hp && before compac
it's dead, amen. there are about 26 people (in the world) still using it like ada programmers. Last edited by guggach : November 6th, 2004 at 10:04 AM. Reason: change |

Actually it would be nice if those older os's went away. But they don't.
In 1998 we got a new customer that was still using a TOPS10 box. The last TOPS10 hardware was made in the late 70's. They were forced to migrate to modern equipment because if their system failed, they would not be able to fix it due to lack of replacement parts. They had just placed the last known backplane in existence for their machine into their production machine. Being far-sighted they figured out that the next time they had to replace a backplane they were out of business. You'd be amazed how many RSX, VMS and MVS shops there still are. For similar reasons - most have legacy applications they can't port because of reasons like:the screens are all written in SMS;because the job controller is all written in MUMPS; because they have binaries(with no source code) that only run under VMS (or MVS...). |

VMS is alive and well
VMS is alive and well. There are many major businesses
that rely on it. Many VMS system have been up and running without a reboot for years. It is also very secure. Fixer.. |
