I have two xfs volumes, and I'm trying to restore one to the other. In this case, I'm trying to report a bug, and I was asked to dump the volume to a file, which I did, and then try to restore the file to the volume, instead of directly.

As for the errors, there were a variety mostly based on the location, IIRC.

Working without knowledge of the xfs file system type, hence nor of the utilities (beyond reading man pages) it's going to be hard to diagnose problems without seeing actual errors. However, a couple of things spring to mind - permissions and sizes: permission will be less of an issue as you seem to be doing this as root, which leads to sizes. Is the target file system large enough (either empty or with current contents) to take the contents of the source file system?
One other thing springs (lurches?) tomind and that is the mount option of rtdev (man page says real time device and includes it in 'the same breath' as logdev. This makes me wonder if the stream of data being piped across is causing timing/quantity issues with the logging. Could you mount the target file system without the rtdev option?

Heh. I just tried the command:

    Code:
    xfsrestore -J -f xfsdump_hr20 /mnt/fp
again to test for errors, and it worked

Its currently in the midst of the restore as we speak.

Thanks again for helping me through this, Simon

No worries, I know how it feels trying to deal with things like that that are potentially "devastating" if you get them a little wrong!
