Angry ado cursortype demotion

I'm trying to access an Ingres Solaris OI 2.0/9712 server from an Ingres II 2.5 Windows client using ado in a vb6 application.

Here's the code:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Dim utilitiesDBconn As New ADODB.Connection

utilitiesDBconn.Open "DSN=CA_med_m;uid=ingres;pwd=dbadmin"
sql_prod = "select * from productivity"
Dim rs As New ADODB.Recordset
rs.CursorLocation = adUseServer
On Error GoTo 0
rs.Open Source:=sql_prod, _
ActiveConnection:=utilitiesDBconn, _
CursorType:=adOpenStatic, _
LockType:=adLockReadOnly
rs.MoveFirst
rs.MoveLast
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I get an error on the rs.MoveLast saying "rowset does not support backward fetching". Further investigation revealed that my adOpenStatic is not having any effect, the cursorType is getting changed to adForwardOnly, no matter what cursorType I put in the rs.Open call.

Any ideas?!

Greg
