Installing VB 6.0

I am trying to install VB 6.0 on my Windows XP Pro machine and I keep getting a "16 bit Windows Subsystem" error, stating "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Windows applications." Can someone tell me what is going on here. This is a 32 bit system. Why is this happening? How can I fix it?

Thank in advance.
