How long does WAP have to live?

Some of the sites I know,(newsbroadcasting etc) have dropped WAP. This because of the new generation of cell phones that just use a normal browser.

My question, is it worth to have a WAP function at all?

i'd say yes it is still alive, remember there are millions of old phones being handed down to younger family members and so on, millions of cheap pay as you go customers on 2g handsets so I reckon it still has some years left in it.

i reckon anyone starting on a wap site now should do a basic wml version for the older styled phones and a xhtml version for 3g phones, smartphones and so on......

Hello,

I think the markup languages of WAP and that of Web will become more and more similar in the future, but WAP will live due to the fact that mobile phones have some unique characteristics that do not exist in a computer. For example, HTML of the Web does not allow you to customize a mobile phone's softkeys. If you want to customize the softkeys for your WAP application, you have to use WAP-specific features. Another example is that HTML does not support the controlling of the input mode of a mobile phone's keypad. If you want a user to type some numeric characters in an input field, a professionally designed WAP site should set the keypad to numeric input mode automatically.
