isn't WAP almost obsolete ?

at least in the US... nobody that plans on using a cell phone for anything but just voice will be buying anything but "smart phones", imho.

Even all the new PDA,Pocket PCs and other hand-held devices with the new processors are running Windows mobile and can read regular HTML or XHTML...

As a wireless application developer I am moving away from WAP...and more towards the future...

future proofing your applications is always a good idea, even so wap will still be around for years to come.

our second largest income comes from the us on poly sales which are downloaded through wap so there's still life in the old dog yet, albiet a bit of a mongrel in comparison to the newer breeds......

Depending on what countries you wanna server and what kind of people, although, I think it is a good idea to still serve wap since the xhtml support varies quite a lot between manufacturs and phone models, ex. if you create mobile pages as strict xhtml then you have to be careful what tags to use

WAP took a big hit when first deployed when Nokia released the first WAP phone, the 7110 which didn't implement a lot of the WML tags properly and crashed frequently.

The company I was working for had a lot of high hopes and plans for WAP but the poor implementation was a showstopper. And I know that they weren't the only ones who felt the same. By the time respectable WAP implementations were coming online, HTML on phones was starting to come around the corner for those who needed such services.

WAP, a good opportunity wasted.

i can remember the first tv ads here in the uk for wap, there was a guy on a bus sitting there then he got his phone out and starting browsing the net through his phone, while doing this he got sucked into a vivid colourful world that was all the bells and whistles, a TOTAL OVERSELL.........

WAP may be obselete on phones but in the UK it's found growing strength on Digital TV platforms and is currently used to provide services regularly on 7 million set top boxes. Now if you don't fancy acquring a new skillset I suggest switching medium...
