Ringtone extensions

Hello,
what extensions do ringtones usually have? i saw on myxertones.com that if i visit the site from my phone browser and enter the code for a song and try to download it, it says that my phone doesn't support it (i have a blackberry).. and with my other phone (razor) i can download the ringtone.

How can they tell which phone i have and are there diferent extensions for different phones? or can they all play mp3s?

Device detection and then probably more detailed detection if they know you are using a hand-held.
Not all phones play mp3s.

some other extensions are aac, mp4, amr, wma, ogg. The supported types depend on whether your phone supports polyphonic or truetype.

Polyphonic supports only midi files.

The other question is, how do they figure out what phone I have and whether i support it or not? is there a public database of list of phones and extensions they support?

and how do you actually do that in WAP? is the phone model $ passed in the header?

Well Nokia have all their phones profiles available online.
I think that WURFL may be your easiest option here.

It has an extensive XML file with most specifications -
not sure whether this would include supported files: though it may well.
