I'm a beginner in WAP programming and I'd like to develop a system that sends SMS from through a web server to a phone and stores those SMS in a mySQL database.
What do I require? Do I really need a GSM modem? Is it better to run it on Windows 2000 or Linux? |

After much research and downloads here are the specifications to get anyone interested in Kannel going:
Download a copy of kannel from http://www.kannel.org If you do not have appropriate addresses to you Mobile service provider you can use a GSM modem i.e a mobile phone with an GSM modem - > I used a Siemens c35 You then configure the gateway to ensure that it's communicating with you modem. There you go! -> you have kannel up and running on your Linux system. |

kakarizz,
i am also looking to start my own SMS gateway via kannel. i noticed you using it on a siemens C35. For this, are you using your mobile phone provider's SMSC? Or does kannel somehow allow you to create your own? I am also a beginner in this and just looking for some clarification. Thank you! |

Kannel uses your GSM enabled phone as a virtual SMSC by default for an SMS gateway. I'd prefer you use a Siemens C45 it works better.
You can find its documentation on in kannel.org |

thank you for your quick reply. so this utilizes the SMSC of the provider whose SIM is in the phone....in that case...i would want to try one step further. how would i go about starting my own SMSC? I'd probably be buying SMS's in bulk...and kannel i assume cannot do this?

Already your phone is a Virtual SMSC, once functional with kannel, any credit in your SIM card will be utilized the same way you use it on the phone, for SMS costing you should consult you mobile subscriber for a premium SIM, if your going to be doing this for profit. |

SMSC is maintained by the network operator. There is no need for you to start your own SMSC. Kannel is a SMS gateway, which can be used to connect to a SMSC or GSM modem for the purpose of sending and receiving SMS. If you want to know more about sending and receiving SMS, you can go to http://www.developershome.com/sms and have a look. |

I'm using Siemens C35 too. How do I setup this on the kannel.conf? I see Siemens TC35, not the C35. I can start the bearerbox and smsbox without any problems. But the think I can't get any message come in or out from my phone. It just stuck in my computer. Can't read it from the computer. Any suggestion/hints? THanks. |
