WAP=wireless application protocol, the protocol used to transfer data, like HTTP in web pages FTP in file transfer, SMTP NNTP etc
WML=Wireless Markup language, an implementation of XML for WAP enabled devices, superceding HDML. Browsers are beginnig to understand CSS now also. WMLScript is WML's client side scripting language.

As for compatabilty it is much better than standards compliance on the web, but with new technologies it's starting to get tricky again  Older devices can only understand HDML, ignore them like you would NN users
