XHTML-Basic vs. WML

Dear All,

Can anyone fill me in about the use of XHTML-Basic outside Japan?

It seems to be the standard over here (Japan that is) but everywhere outside seems to be doing it in WML. Not much info on the web in English either.

Seeing as Japanese Mobile technology seems to be a few years ahead of everywhere else, some of the main manufacturers are Japanese and i-Mode is reaching (well trying anyway) it's tentacles into Europe, will WML be replaced?

I mean adapting content from the web to XHTML-Basic is soooo much easier than converting it to wml (from what I can see anyway)

Any thoughts, opinions?
