800x600 or 1024 x 768?
hi,
i am a parnter in KM web Development, designing and building websites, etc. Me and my buisisness partner were recently having a "discussion" on whether we should be building sites in 800x600 or 1024x768, to suite more people. Anyway, please could you enter the poll, for which resolution you are in, or prefer to view websites in. thankyou |

I currently am using larger display than you list, but when I design, I am for fitting in 800x600 still - I try to make sites fluid though, so they fill the screen no matter what resolution.

I would have to agree with everyone above. If you MUST create a fixed width layout, then 800x600 is the way to go.

At work I'm @ 1024x768. At home I use 1152 x 864. The latter looks the sharpest on my LCD screen, for some reason even sharper than 1024x768. But I would assume any user has 800x600. Anyone still at 640x480 probably has problems anyway.

Higher is better IMO
I have my display set to 1600x1200. I like it when only I can read it. Granted, I test the sites I develop on machines with lower resolution to ensure everything is fine.

I'm running 1280x1024, and I think it all depends on the type of website you're developing.
If you're developing a youth oriented website, go for 1024x768, they are more likely to be using a higher resolution. If you're developing for like. a small business in your town, that will most likely be used by older people, go for 640x480, or 800x600. |

You'll find that most people, even if they do have large resolutions [Mine is 1920x1600] don't browse with their browsers full screen. Most of my browsers are somewhere around 1000x800 ish.
I'm with Jabba. If you develop for 800x600 with fluidity, the page will still look good in a bigger res, but if you develop at a bigger res, the pages will often look sh|te at lower res.

i browse with my brower full screen.. i use 1600 * 1200 (21inch CRT), and it's just a habit from 800*600 screen, not used to put it any lower.. i use opera, so i like to put my screen magnifier to 120-150, for text i can't read lol..

Generally (and always in my honest opinion) the best sites are ones that are designed to look good at 800x600 but are scalable to look good at 1024x768+. Unfortunately, you tend to have problems with absolute positioning with stylesheets. So, it's kind of hard to pull off.
For personal preference, I much prefer having my websites have its main content flush-left and having empty filler on the right than to have a site that encompasses a fixed width bigger than 800x600. Several non-Windows users don't maximize their browsers (including yours truly), but in the end-all people can just choose to maximize them to deal with the content. 800x600 is something of an unofficial standard for the late 90s, but these days most people will do 1024x768 by default. So, I don't feel it's THAT big of an issue. |
