Adobe PS CS or Macromedia MX 2004?

I would like to learn either one of the software to build experience.
Looking at the education price for each license, Fireworks is much lower (Studio MX 2004) compared to Photoshops.

I understand Photoshop is the leader in image editing but Fireworks can do what Photoshop does, right?
Which would you personally recommend out of the two? And why?
I doubt I have time to learn both program and once I start, I would like to remain with that program.

Can Fireworks create 1)online images from scratch (banners & logos), 2)cut and paste two photos together (stitching), 3)change colors of an image, 4)crop images, and 5)adjust brightness & contract?

These are the main features I am looking for.

Fireworks can do all of the basic stuff you'll need to create images for websites.

However, I've never personally found the user interface, functionality, or 'smoothness' of fireworks to compare to photoshop. Photoshop is just a more polished, in-depth app.

Photoshop is a much more polished application for graphics development and photo editing. Fireworks focuses more on the web dev aspect and contains less filters, options, etc. to make your graphics really shine.

I, personally, use Adobe Photoshop+Imageready CS ( for graphics ) in conjunction with Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 ( for the XHTML, CSS, PHP, etc. coding ) and Flash MX 2004 Pro. This provides all of the options I need for development.

I think Fireworks has a trial so you could test it out. Not sure, though.
