Background
I have a background which is not a pattern. To keep down load times and bandwidth usage, I was thinking maybe there is a way to tell the users screen resolution and using an appropriately sized BG image rather than just using one huge one to be safe. Haven't turned up any results in searches, is there a better option?

If it's not a pattern, why do you need an image?
There are certain techniques to optimize the use of images on web pages...

I think he wants to use different (large, static) background images depending on the visitor's screen resolution.
This would be possible to do via Javascript, but I'm not sure how efficient it would be. |

right..large static image. i just mean it doesn't have consistency so I can't make a small image and repeat it. best bet is just saving for largest possible res then?

Maybe. There might be an alternative, but we can't tell without seeing it. |
