Smile Damned Clients

Shouldn't Grumble really.

I design a site for a client and now they want to interact with the site themselves. ie. post news letters etc.

How can I give them secure access to certain pages and allow them to update the pages but not allow them to meddle with the site admin?

Cheers Bana

use server side programs and text files that load text and variable format.

(And yes it is much more complicated than it sounds)

err! Thanks I think.

Wavy dark mysterious lines bring the image of a large cows dufa into focus.

Why does everyone insist on making computing seem such a dark art? I have yet to find a internet based skill that required a rocket scientists mind to implement? (stands back and waits for the abuse)

It was a simple question that can either be summed up in a simple answer or I could be directed to some source for the solution which I am sure I can fathom.

Sorry! but nothing is complicated unless the teacher wants to make it seem that way

Cheers

Bana

Try macromedia Contribute

Look into Macromedia Contribute. There's a free trial on macromedia's site: URL

It seems pretty simple to use (even for clients), and the interface is similar to Dreamweaver. I'm not sure about the best way to set access permissions to different pages, but I think you can "check out" certain pages and prevent anyone else from making changes to the. hope this helps.

Or if they want to have a "newsletter", you can set up a blog that they can post to whenever they want. URL has a free one that's reliable and pretty easy to use once you set things up for them. Here's on I put up for a client as an example of how that works: URL (click on "hot news")

yes macromedia contribue is the answer you are looking for...

you can set urself up as andministrator and give the client certain permissions and keys - has built in FTP etc but is designed for the client to use and integrates into dreamweaver for the developer

you can build the templates in dreamweaver and then they can login with contribute - its only $99 so its not to bad - and they can go in and "edit" htm[l] pages

if your site is set up well it is really a great solution

i have been using it for a couple months now and had people that have no knowledge of web development of HTML at all making content changes - infact you cant even veiw html in contribute (not sure i like this personally but i guess thats the nature of the product)

you are still in control however - you can lock off as much of it as you want in your dreamweaver templates

definitely check out the trial and do the little flash intro tutorial thing and see what you think...its a great idea

good lucky and rock on!!

I am not a teacher and if you think programming isn't complicated you have much to learn and I wish you all the luck in the world. I hope you got the answer you wanted from the other posts because you are not going to get any more info from me.

Thanks Rynoe, I did get all I wanted from the reply posts.

Sorry If I hacked you off but I don't find it complicated and I do have so much to learn as you rightly say. Learning never hurt a fly.

Not that I am green, I have been in the industry since the late 70's, made a fortune, lost a fortune and made a fortune again ,

The net and my clients are just a hobby to keep me agile, so give me a break. There are a thousand of such forums like this on the web and with or without your help I will soldier on. If you want to reply with the type of comments you have given, twice in this thread then don't bother, they offer nothing to anybody, Personally I wonder how you find the time to waste.

As for not giving any more to me? Had you given any? Maybe one day I will be able to help you with an answer and believe me I will if I can, so lets keep it friendly.

Bana

Hey Bana your too old to be nice. You should be bitter and grumpy. Just kidding! Contribute would have been my answer as well.

Chill out Rynoe, it's just old people and thier strange humor. He wasn't trying to piss you off.
