Hi all,
I'm new here. I develop websites part time and was asked about developing a site similar to a monster.com or other job search type sites where users can upload resumes, have a login, search for jobs, etc. I have some experience with coldfusion but I haven't had a web development job that requires a log in or for a scenario such as this where users can search for particular jobs. I have my BA in Info Sys (database developer by trade) but I just recently started (last 1.5yrs) started getting into web design (self-taught). Any thoughts on how complex these sites are, how much should I charge? Is Coldfusion the best why to go? The company doesn't want a mega site but they do want to be able to perform the functions that most job search sites offer. I don't want to totally back out of this type of project because I need the experience and the money ofcourse and I don't know anyone with experience developing database driven websites that I can bring on and work with on a project like this. Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated. I've got quite a bit of reading to do over the next few days...... Thanks for all replies. ![]() |

This is a huge project, and I'd be really careful if you have no experience with this sort of stuff.
File uploads, searches, logins: sounds kind of nuts. There are tons of legal issues with job sites as well. ColdFusion is probably the easiest to use, provided that you can get over the initial learning curve. The down-side of it is cost, but it sounds like you've already got access to the software. But seriously, you're looking at months of development time if you go this alone without knowing exactly what you're doing. It doesn't matter how large or small the company wants their site, it's the functionality that really drives the development time. Have a good time with it though. |

Did a similar site about 2 years ago. Charged $10k, 1 month of development time. I did it by myself and worked on average 10 hours a day, 6 days a week (comes out to around $40/hour). If you know how to write all the modules you need (user authentication, file upload, search, etc) it's not a big deal, but I've been building web apps for years and I work very quickly. Someone new to the game might not be able to bust it as quickly as I did.

wdn2000, Thanks so much for your reply. I totally understand what it takes but like you said being a newbie I'm just a bit concerned about doing it on my own. I'm glad you listed how much you charged as I'm not certain. I've been emailing a Webmonkey.com contributor who also encouraged me since I have a database background that I could do it on my own. If I definitely get the green light to start the project I have 2 people with the technical background to assist. I know it will be various forms and user logins to deferentiate between employeer and employee. I'm still practicing a bit with Coldfusion so I'll see how it goes. ![]() |
