Disable "Save Picture AS..."
Is there a way to disable the "save Picture As..." option. Our site will have original artwork available to buy, we don't want people to be able to save it to there systems and print it out...

You can do, do a search. There are even tweaks for IE 6.
However, there are always way around it, i.e. temp files etc. If you have got access to server side scripting, i.e. PHP, you might be able to do it, try searching the PHP forums for this information. There was a thread related to this, and a site where yo couldn't get the images at all - but I have no idea how they did it. HTH

My theory...you see it, you can get it. Reason being..what about screenshots? see a picture you like, take a screenshot, cut it out and bam you've got the image. Pretty difficult

To answer your question, you can add this to the <HEAD>:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="imagetoolbar" CONTENT="no"> That will prevent the image bar from showing up. As the others have stated though, there is always a way around it.

there is no point disabling the "Save Picture As". as the rest mentioned, it still can be copied. however since you are selling original artwork, why not put a watermark on your images? like the word "sample" or "your company name" or "author name" with the word "copyright" diagonally across your image. this are just my 2 cents. That way they can't print out your picture without having the watermark. If they do not want the watermark, then they have to purchase from you.

@Beckwith
That might be the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time. If you went to an art museum, and saw a picture you liked, would you rip it down and take it home?? No!! That picture is not yours to take. If you put a picture up on a website that is not yours and you give no credit to the owner, I am pretty sure you can be sued. That is plagerism (sp?). |

draynade: His point was that you're not going to stop anyone from getting a copy of the image no matter what. If you show it on the web, you're giving them a copy.
Your options are: 1) Legal. Make sure you copyrights, proper usage, etc, are clearly published 2) Watermark 3) Low quality displays on web 4) Password protect area with logging of who views what image, etc. Won't stop them from saving it, but you'll control who sees it. ---John Holmes... |

You could also try to embed the images in and html embedded object with flash or a java applet. Flash has password protection.

Just to add my two cents, yes embedding a non-image type of format like flash is much better than any sort of cross-your-fingers javascript rule. One can, as pointed out, always take a screenshot if one is determined enough.
A watermark is also a very good solution. And common. |

Yes there is. Place the image as background in a <table>, <td> or <div>. Nothing stopping taking screen shots though.

..ah... of course, then place a transparent gif over it the same size as your image as otherwise you can save background picture.

Here is THE answer!
Quote:
I was nice before but because of these lame posts (except for arantius) I have decided to re-post. Emmbed the gif within an object, preferably flash mx or higher which provides password protection. As to screenshots: Create an effect like the ever popular 'magnify glass'. Which Are a nice effect on front end but bad for hacker use!
