ebay idea

I want to create a simple version of e-bay where people can view and add items for sale. When they add an item they add there email address and so when someone wants to buy an item the seller is automatically emailed with the buyers email address and the transaction continues off site.
What i would like to know is, what is the best language to use php? perl? etc and what would be the best way of going about creating this. it has to be able to run on a unix server. Thanks

are you mad?

ebay functions perfectly well and has millions of users... why would you possibly want to waste your time with a project like this that noone will use?

There are probably hundred's of "best" ways to go about doing something like this. Just depends on what programming language you have the most knowledge in. I personally could probably do it fastest with PHP...but thats just me.

Thumbs up good luck

first of all good luck with your uni prject. if you want to run on UNIX, then PHP and mySQL combination is the perfect option for you. You can download PHP from URL and mySQL from URL

You need to first understand PHP and mySQL before doing any programming. configuring them on your unix server can be slightly tricky if you are not very comfortable with the OS, but once the configuration is completed then it works like a roll.

Now, after that has been completed, check out eBay and see how they use the auction system.

The next major step will be the design of the database of the auction site that u are trying to make.

Good luck...

Hey!!

Im trying to tackle ebay off its high horse. I mean who will compremend my site when it has a large enough user community and only charges £2 per guitar compared to anything up to £40 that ebay charges?!?

Jack.

P.S Use PHP that language rocks. ASP = Bad News.
