These are sites I've found especially helpful: http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/ Always start and end with validated code. This is sometimes trickier than it seems. I like this validator better than W3C one simply because it will check an entire site for you. http://diveintoaccessibility.org/ This is one of the easiest guides to accessibility I have found. It takes the form of a 30-day calendar, each day giving you tutorials on adding accessible elements, and describing just who is helped by it. If you want to be accessible, but aren't sure where to start, check this site out. http://trace.wisc.edu/world/web/ A links site to the major accessibility guidelines. http://bobby.watchfire.com/bobby/html/en/index.jsp Bobby-an automated validation test, much like those for HTML. Note, just because you pass, does not mean you are valid-there are still visual checks that Bobby cannot make, but this helps. http://www.contentquality.com/ and http://www.hisoftware.com/accmonitorsitetest/ Both part of the 'Cynthia Says' gang. These are compliance tools like Bobby. I find them a little more useful than Bobby-more pointers on what you are doing right/wrong, plus the 2nd link will check your entire site for you. http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.html If you don't have access to a Lynx browser, try this. Viewing your pages in Lynx helps you visualize how people using accessibility devices will see your site. http://www.vischeck.com/vischeck/ Ever wonder how the colorblind see your graphics? This is uses filters to simulate your webpage as it would be seen by the visually impaired. http://www.lighthouse.org/color_contrast.htm Another site addressing the need for effective color contrast on websites. There is contention on how best to use accesskeys-google and you'll see numerous articles. Simple things to do: - If you can, see if you can download the JAWS screen reader or other tools, or enlist the aid of friends who use them. - View your site in Lynx. - View your site with pictures turned off. You'll be amazed by how different your site seems and the small things you can do (like having a 'skip navigation' link if you have all your navigation on top) that make viewing the site much more pleasant. Hope this helps, NotGoddess |
