Unhappy Help with MP3s

I'm posting a few 3 minute song MP3s to the web and I'm having some trouble since I've not really worked with sound files before.

The problem is the size vs. quality. I'm getting each 3 minute clip down to 2MB by compressing them with DBPowerAmp to 96kbps at 44100 Hz. If I compress them any further, (for example to 64kbps) they sound like mud

Any suggestions? I've seen complete song files all over the web that are much lighter! What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
