If you don't want a third party hit counter, you must have some server side scripting language (e.g. php, cgi scripts...) available on the server where your homepage is hosted. If so, you can either search the web for such a script or you can make one by yourself.
If you're not used to scripting languages, use google first before trying to make one by yourself.

Why bother?

I've always wondered why people want hit counters... is it an ego thing? They don't mean much anyway - usually if you look at your site to check it or if someone has it as their home page it just keeps on counting.

why do you bring up a two week old thread just to offer your opinion? the odds are they are still going to want a hit counter regardless of what YOU think of them.

Sorry...

Hey Jack,

I'm not trying to step on toes.

I was just going through some of the threads and trying to contibute. I didn't realise it was two weeks old or that it mattered. Two weeks a long time? I didn't realise that. People do actually search these threads (I know I do) and so sometimes when something was written really doesn't seem to matter (unless it was about two years ago).

Was that really so bad to point out that hit counters are kind of pointless? I think sometimes people use them almost like it's expected - you have to have a hit counter on a website. I was just trying to raise the idea that you don't actually need a hit counter.

So... sorry to have offended you there Jack. I'll try not to do it again.

Cheers for now.

Steve
