It depends completely on what type of webcam you're using, how you're hosting your website etc. You really need to provide more details. I've hosted a webcam from my computer at home using WebCam2000 before. The image isn't live, but it can be updated every time the user refreshes their browser.

THANKS for responding.
We would like to use a medium type webcam (not very expensive) but what really I would like to know is: once we have the webcam how do we make it display the store images on the internet. Do we need extra software? We are being hosted on a Unix server. Please advise. |

You've got to decide whether you want to host the webcam yourself or host images elsewhere. If you host images elsewhere, you'll probably get the webcam to upload an image every minute (or so) to your server via FTP. Whenever anyone views your site, they'll see the current image (which may be up to one minute old).
If you want a live webcam image, you'll have to host it yourself. Whenever someone wants to see the webcam, they'll actually have to connect to your local network to see the video. So you'd need a reliable and fast internet connection. I don't really have much experience with doing this, so I suggest you search Google for some appropriate software. But also check to see what software your webcam comes with. |

A few years ago I tried the same thin gyou did with some success.
I found software which had a tiral run where I could broadcast my web cam over the into net and people could access it by going to my IP address and accessing the HTML file. Just like edwinbrains said. I don't know how the software served the pages I KNOW I didn't have apache or IIS configured or installed. It was on a windows 98 machine. I also saw some sites that have web cams that do seem to be doing it using the other method, updating the pic every 30 seconds or so. I don't think this would require a larg ammount of disk space. Couldn't you just have the camera software, or some other software, to change the name of the camera to the same name everytime and just overwrite the old one and forget about archives :P Otherwise you'd probably have to write a script that picked which picture you want by date and display it, showing the newest picture all the time. |

Thank you all. I guess I would need to buy a webcam first and then see what I need. But from what you have said I really get the concept. Thanks a lot guy.
