Create an image 17x17, save it in your document root as favicon.ico

I've created an image (17x17), saved as gif (photoshop doesn't support ico) then renamed it to favicon.ico and uploaded to www folder on my host. Nothing happens. Don't i have to link it somewere in the html document?

You have to have a program that crates icons. Photoshop is not that program.

you need to add a line of code to your document to tell IE where the icon is.
