By the designs not being great, do you just mean they don't look good, or something else?

Do a google search for "web safe colors" and take a look at www.webpagesthatsuck.com
They promote good web design by showing bad design. |

Also Web standards awards show great design, if you think your design isn't up to scratch then just post it up in website critiques and everyone there will help you out.

Thanks Greevar. It's been a long time since I thought of that site. Was good for a laugh and a reminder of how bad some sites are. Last edited by edwinbrains : December 11th, 2004 at 01:44 PM. |

Start like I did. Take the existing colors of a site you like, and pair them with the existing design of another site. Practice making CLONES of sites you like. Figure out how to do the structure, and practicing learning what colors look good together. Make a pallette file with swatches of the color schemes on a big site. Then make up your own structure and figure out how to make these colors work, and when they don't work - example: do backgrounds need to be lighter or dark than content, how does a white background affect coloring.... In a word, Practice. Practice making what you know works well, and then just work from there. |
