If you aren't familiar with running a web site you might be surprised to find that getting visitors (or "hits") is the most important thing you will do. You can spend tens of thousands of dollars hiring the most expensive web designers and have an glorious website, but if you do not get interested people to see it, your money will be wasted. Some of the most successful sites have very simple designs but the site owners take an active roll in making sure the promotion is done right.

Good Content Great Back links and Join A forum!
Okay so you don't need to join a forum, you are already here. Just being here is not going to get you anywhere, join in and leave constructive help all over the place. This will build your reputation and help put your profile all over the place in a good forum. This forum has extremely good ranking on the Internet, a great plug for Dev Shed.
Yes you must have good content, at least 300 to 400 words a page or post and it needs to make sense to both the reader and the bots. Good keywording in your articles will help. Don't stuff keywords in, if they make sense use them, if not, don't stuff your site, you will pay for it in the rankings.
If you don't know how to do back links, do a Google search and find out.
I think that this a better answer that some of the crap I read on here. No offense to the people that did offer good quality answers.

Yeah on page and off page seo can help you regarding this. Make an seo strategy. This will help ranking up your site. Made account and page of your website on social media sites. This thing will help you in online social media marketing. Spread the words of your site in groups of social media sites to the people who need services which is offering by you. You can do off page seo by using keywords in your content. Also do image and video optimizing. I know the video optimizing become difficult but you can do image optimizing easily. Post a flyer of your website on image hosting sites. Share that image on the wall of social media networks group. By doing this you can increase the traffic on your site.
Last but not least. There must be something interesting thing on your site so the visitor should stay on site. Also target the concern people while spreading the word of your site. Because if you target the people who don't have concern with your site they will come and after opening and stay for few moment they will close the page. This thing increase the traffic but doesn't increase or generate any lead.
best of luck.
You should add more content to your website. This is the method of increasing traffic that is most ignored by website owners. Many people donít realize that each of the inner pages of any website functions like a mini-website, in that they are doorways through which the site will be found in search engines and through which people will enter. If you add more pages with optimized content you will increase the chances of being found in search engines for a wide variety of search terms, and this will result in an increase in traffic.

I couldn't agree more! These techniques work for both e-commerce websites but also for blog type websites. However, if you have a blog type one, you'll have to always offer new content and keep it fresh, and maybe short as the readers will surely get bored if you give them wall of text to read. Be always present on the social media... create a fan/website page on Facebook and get as many likes for your page as possible. This way your posts/products will be seen by as many people possible (and free) and will bring you more visitors. PayperClick is also an option if you create attention grabbing banners but only if you have money to spare. Personally I think that promoting a website can be done even without investing too much money in the ads. The key is content and content is King!

Way to increese your web site traffic
1.Write more content. If you want to increase site traffic, youíve got to write content. People will not visit your site if you donít write a decent
amount of good quality content, and new visitors definitely wonít come back. So keep writing great posts!
2.Have a good design and layout. If your site or blogís design is messy, sloppy, hard to navigate, a rainbow of colors that donít match or are hard on the eye, or full of errors, you will instantly go down the drain.
3.Get your own domain. I promise that if you have your domain, you will get more traffic. You will linked to more and people will more easily remember your URL. Try to get your own domain and have it from the start.
4.Start using StumbleUpon. I have had a HUGE success with StumbleUpon. When the right article from your blog meets StumbleUpon, expect a lot of people to rate your post a thumbs up, and then even more people ďstumbling uponĒ your blog.
5.Guest blog. Offer to write a post on someone elseís site. Even better, have the post already written up and then let the blogger know you have a post ready to guest blog on their site, if itís okay with them. When you write your guest blog post, find a post on your own blog thatís related and link to in your guest blog post. A link for you on their blog, and more ability to increase site traffic.
It is based on your unique content, medium traffic keywords, Backklinks, Making outbound link, submitting post, active participation in social media, creating blogs, using blog commenting. By this you can increase your site visitors. That is you should have the knowledge of both on page and off page seo.
