making a site work with https

I have had a look around the web but cant seem to find an answer, so here goes...

https, a secure protocol for transmitting between a website and a server using some form of encryption - am i right?

so how would i go about making a website use https rather than http? does this mean that everything is encrypted before being sent, both to and from the server, you don't need to specify what you want encrypted?

you dont see any reason why you couldn't write a page in php which would write various fields to a file using https do you?

any other info you have on https would be great

I believe you need to buy a SSL certificate or either create a self assigned certificate.
