Need Help with Slow Website

I operate URL . We sell vintage baseball cards. The problem that I have is that we have a huge database of items for sale and the pages load slooooow. For example, go to the baseball cards and select a particular year - say in the 1960's. It takes 20 to 30 seconds for a page of 50 cards to come up. One of my competitors is getting his pages up in about 2 seconds. My developer says that the problem is the storefront merchant software that we are using. The software is also very difficult to use. I can not easily add new inventory or edit the web pages.

I need help! How do I find someone who is used to developing e-commerce sites with this many items? I am welcome to suggestions.

I'm on broadband so it did not seem that bad to me, those on a dial up connection may experience longer wait times. To be honest with you, those interested in the cards you sell would be willing to wait for the pages to load.
