Old web site still on internet
Not sure if I am in the right forum but I am having a bit of trouble with my site.
My site has a flash intro with some music. when the intro is complete there is a link to the html site. I modified the site a bit, changed the music and some minor things. The problem is when I go to the site I see the old site with the old music. Do I have to delete the temporary internet files everytime I change something on the site? This cannot be good for people who dont know I changed the site. THey wouldnt know to delete the temp internet files. Can someone explain what is going on here? And how I can fix this? Thanks |

Sounds like a caching issue. Which browser (and version number) are you using?

Yes or your server is caching. Clear your history, files and cookies and check. If it is better then its the first. Or try another browser.

You can avoid browser cashing by using different file names when you make changes, every time you go to a web page your browser loads the html but if it has files stored in the cash for that page with same name it uses them. if the file name is changed it will load the new file.

It is a problem you have on your internet browser.
In your browser (ie : microsoft Internet explorer) Go to Tool > Internet options > General > Settings > Check for newer versions of stored pages: make sure "Automatically" or "every visit to the page" is selected. And of course delete temp files. |

Interesting.
Thanks.
How does internet explorer know the difference between a newer version and an older version? |

I am not too sure how to answer this question,
My guess is that Internet Explorer does not know. If the correct options have been ticket, it will automatically - i would use sytematically- download the page, instead of looking in the cache. I am unfortunately not very knowledgeable about how IE works everything out. Also, to make sure you have the newest page, press Ctrl and F5, it will refresh the page and IE will then look for the most recent one. Ctrl -F5 is a shortcut for the button refresh on your internet browser. Sometimes , it is good to do it several time, to close the browser and re open it, then you are sure you are watching the most recent page. Hope it helps you and answer all your questions. Vincku |

Vincku, Yes you've helped me, but I just have more questions.
I have found to links that I thought were very interesting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221538/EN-US/ http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=282849 I have IE6.0 sp1. I am set to automatic, and I am folloinging the instructions on the above links, but sometimes I sttill see my old page. |

Sorry for being so long to reply.
I am not sure that the problem comes from the browser then, but from the HTML itself. Check your meta tag within the head. Also, this maybe will help you: http://www.devx.com/projectcool/Article/17871/0/page/7 I am sorry this is already far beyond my level! I am also doing a website, but can not find the energy to do all the writings in it.Well, I gave myself until the end of this month to finish the first build. So good luck to you, I am sure you did a great job! |

If you get the mouse gestures extension for firefox there's a neat little gesture to reload a page without visiting the cache. I'm not sur eof which extension it is, but it's the most popular mouse gesture one heh. To do it the gestures is Up Down Up. Excellent for web development I've found =D

use meta tags for no cache
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">.

I've found that the 'automatic' setting in IE doesn't always work.
I would set it to check once per session to be safe. |
