P3P: is it really necessary?
Hello here.
I have just read the article by Nicholas Fehlberg on SitePoint about P3P (The Platform for Privacy Preferences Project): http://www.sitepoint.com/article.php/1307 and sincerely I didn't know about it before that reading. Now I am a little confused and worried. My natural question is: is it a guideline really necessary? How many sites have it already implemented? How much really the browsers are taking care of it? What are the risks involved in NOT implementing it? Any speculation and idea is very welcome. Fab.

The author's case involves third-party cookies and cross-domian transfers. Could he make things a little more complicated please? How often do you do this?
You should try really hard to create your site so that it does not depend on cookies being enabled. If there is a section that requires cookies, check the browser first to see if they're available. (same for JavaScript) Before you go implementing this, you might want to make sure M$ actually read the W3C standard and didn't bork it up like they did with CSS in the 5.X browsers. How long before we have to make work-arounds for some bug in this "feature"? The discussion about the little red eye is amusing. I dealt with "the average end-user" for about a year (in their own homes on their own computers, not in the office on an administered computer) and here's the consensus: don't alert me to anything, ignorance is bliss. People were amazed when I told them about the little padlock thingy and what it was for. "I never knew that" they'd say. Just look at PayPal's security information. It's full of "basics" that you would think anybody that puts their credit card on the internet would know, but they obviously have that there b/c they have users that don't know this stuff. Now, with all of that said, it is a W3C standard, so you might think about beginning to implement it. I would approach it by reading the standard and following the recommendation as stated. Keep in mind too that the W3C is known to change its standards

Dear Jeremy,
thank you for your information. I have just implemented it, so I am sure to be "W3C compliant". Thank you again. Sincerely, Fabrizio. |
