Hey Folks!
Check this out : http://www.kieselkarikaturen.de/2001/png_test.htm Why does the transparency not work? |

What software are you using to create the PNG?

From URL
Non-transparent PNGs are displayed correctly in Netscape 4.04 and later, and in Internet Explorer 4.0b1 and later. Few current browsers support transparent PNGs well, or even at all |

i use photoshop 6 to create the pngs (the areas which are meant to be transparent show up as grey)

the only way I could get a transparent PNG to show up properly was by saving it as 8-bit rather than 24-bit and using index transparency.
it seems the alpha channel transparency isn't supported by the browsers. Do you need 24-bit, or are the colours simple enough for 8-bit? |

also, netscape doesn't render pngs too well.

Hi there,
If your REALLY need to have PNGs with alpha transparency, the only way is using them inside a Flash movie, cuz Macromedia Flash is the only program (as far as I know) who can handle it. Save as 24-bit + transparency PNG. Import into Flash. ![]() Hope this helps |

hi,
just wondering, what is png good for? seems like from the previous poster that the only program that can handle 24bit png with alpha is flash, so is that where png is used the most? thanks edwin

Hi Ricochet,
Good news, every one! I'm using Mozilla 0.93 and the corners of that square look perfectly white and smooth!!! Nice little piece of design, anyways!! There seems to be light at the end of the png tunnel ![]() Look at thread 21979 I posted. Somebody (I put this there for) is requesting for participation on a petition for (proper) png support in Internet Explorer! It has not been my idea though ![]() Hoping you take part there: Atrus.

The reason one uses PNGs rather than GIFs is not only because the compression, colour depth and other techy things are better than GIFs, but also for ethical and legal reasons. Unisys hold a patent on the LZW compression algorithm which the GIF uses, and to make software that can use GIFs you have to pay Unisys a great whack of money. Whereas PNGs are public tender, so you can use them at will without any lisencing problems!

PNG's dont show their transparency in explorer without a registry tweak.
They work fine in Netscape 6 and Mozilla 1.0 Stupid Stupid Microsoft... |

It seems they are deliberately boycotting free software here.
