Question from a noob....
So I go out and purchase a domain....
Then, I go and purchase hosting... Now I am having problems. I am using cPanel and I dont know how to get things to work. To give you a little clue, here is what I have done: I have my html files and I have uploaded them tho my public_html directory (which copies them to my www directory) I'm not sure what to do from here... When I got to my URL I still see the placeholder from the company I purchased the domain from.... What gives? Is there someplace that I should put these file other than the directories i have them in? There is no php/perl/cgi etc. It is a basic html page just to get my feet wet.... Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you. EDIT -------------------------------------------------- by the way, the file is named index.html i forgot to mention that... -------------------------------------------------- Last edited by L7Sqr : April 5th, 2004 at 10:59 PM. |

Well, the public_html or www directories are definately what the viewable site will be stored in and play off of....
Just uploading an "index.html" document should automatically cause it to display, nothing should need to be adjusted, assuming your domain is pointed to your server...... Is your server with your domain company? If it isn't, then it's possible you havn't set the nameservers's for the domain to point to the right place..... It that's the case, find the nameserver for your server and place insert them with your domain registeration info.....

Ok.
Thanks for the info.... I had yet to do that. Now I am encountering a similar problem... When i try to visit the site the 'Page cannot be displayed' screen... (it has been longer than 24hrs and i received a confirming email from the domain service announcing the change....) Any further information would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Hmm... first make sure you didn't make a typo, those are responcible more than you'd think...... And see if your server has 2 nameservers.... most do, and if you only have one that might be it.....
Be sure your "index.html" file is in the WWW folder..... maybe try uploading another file and going to it's URL and see if that works..... Dang...... that's all I can think off just off hand..... |

are you sure it's supposed to be 'index.html' and not 'index.htm'?

Doesn't make a difference to the file extension. It could be:
index.htm index.html index.php etc... Regards, Ash. |
