Reposition (& maintain position) of layers

I am new to working with layers in Dreamweaver, and am having some difficulties. I have a page that is essentially a table because I would like to have a particular graphic in the background and it is also part of the navigation background (http://www.cup.ualberta.ca/ffd_test/ffd_home.html). I would like to have text overtop of this. The table itself is about 800 pixels centre aligned to accomodate smaller screen sizes, so I want the layer to be aligned with the left edge of the table, regardless of the size of the window or screen that is displaying the page.

I did download the Snap Layers extension mentioned on another board, but still cannot align and maintain position. More than likely a user-related issue as well. ;-)

Any help appreciated, even if just a heads up to a good tutorial. Thanks!

Miranda

Sorry!

I redid the page to try to show it a little more clearly. I'll explain:

have a page that I'm using as the template for all my pages. I created the design in photoshop, and then exported from image-ready. I am working in dreamweaver, and am creating this page using dreamweaver MX. Now I have a cool looking page divied up into table format, but I want to put text overtop. I don't know how to make this work. I've tried the following:

Rather than inserting the graphics into the cells, I tried using the image as background in the cell and then having the option to type directly in the cell. When I preview the page, the graphic doesn't show up.

I tried putting a layer over top then using that layer to input text, but I can't get the layer to stay centred aligned with the top of the appropriate cell. I have used a dreamweaver extension called snap layers, but the layer is still shifting, and then sometimes shifts again when I refresh the page.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have two links:

This one is to the page with the graphic set as cell background image:

http://www.cup.ualberta.ca/ffd_test/home2

This one is to the page with the layer centred and anchored to the same cell as above:

http://www.cup.ualberta.ca/ffd_test/home3

(If either of these pages work, can you also let me know???)

Not perfect, but...

Hey Miranda.

What about putting a table within a layer on top of the table you have? If it's center-aligned the same as your table is it should be OK. Then you can put text in the cells and position the text with relative positioning.

Have a look at this and you might see what I mean :

funky frog with layered text .

There's a small problem with this though - it seems to me that it works fine in IE, but in Firefox everything is stuck to the left. Personally, I don't really think that's a problem - my main site is like that, but you said you want it centred, so...

Anyway, see what you think.

I hope this has helped.

Cheers,

Steve

Maybe OK now

Erm... I just realised why it was stuck to the left in Firefox - I'd removed the center-align property for the table(s).
It should be good now.

Cheers again.
