Request for commenting on graphic and tips

I am creating a text graphic in MS Publisher/WordArt for web use. I do not have access to PhotoShop/PaintPro/Fireworks and I am trying to do the best with Publisher/WordArt.

I have created the graphics in GIF and JPG formats at 96dpi at 96 dpi using the following fonts:

1) ArialBlack, size 16, Bold
2) Arial, size 16, Bold
3) Tahoma, size 16 Bold
4) Tahoma, size 16, regular
5) Tahoma, size 12, bold

The graphics are not looking good. The text appears smudged when viewed with Internet Explorer.

I am starting new and am clueless if MS Publisher/WordArt can only do so much. Or, I am not using them optimally? Will changing the font style to other types give me a better graphic? What can I do to improve the quality of the graphic?

Since I am a new user at DevShed, I am not able to attach the graphics or attach a links to the graphics. I am happy to e-mail the graphics to anyone who wishes to look at them.

I will appreciate tips/suggestions.
